The Will of Peter Paggen
of Wandsworth, Esquire, 1717

Introduction

Peter Paggen of Wandsworth, Esquire, made his will on 2 October 1717. It was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in London on 15 July 1720 by his widow Katherine, his daughter Katherine Hale, and his niece Dame Sarah Shaw and her husband Sir John Shaw, Baronet.

The will shows a wealthy London merchant with large holdings in East India Company and Bank of England stock. He asked to be buried in the parish church of St Dunstan in the East. He also held a house and grounds of his own in Wandsworth, other copyhold property in the town and its common fields, and leasehold ground from Lord St John, including land in Bridge Field. Much of the will is taken up with careful provision for his younger daughter Sarah, who, he wrote, was “not capable of manageing or taking care of any Estate” (but does not say why).

This transcription is made from the registered copy of the will (The National Archives, PROB 11/575/141). See also the Peter Paggen page, and the wills of his brother William Paggen (1688) and his widow Katherine Paggen (1724).

How to read this transcription. The original spelling, capitals and abbreviations are kept (ffive, doe, Esqr). The original has almost no punctuation and runs on without a break. It has been divided here into short sections, with numbered headings that are not part of the original, and a few full stops have been added.
[Words like this?] are uncertain readings. [Words like this] are editorial notes. ‖126A‖ marks where each photograph of the register begins.

It was proved on the oaths of Catherine Paggen, widow, and Catherine Hale, daughter of the deceased, and of Sir John Shaw, Baronet, and Dame Sarah Shaw his wife, the executors named in the will. * The “united East India Company” was the English company: the United Company of Merchants of England Trading to the East Indies, formed in 1709 when the old (London) East India Company merged with the “New” or English Company of 1698 — the rival company of which Peter Paggen had been a director. Katherine Paggen’s will of 1724 gives the full name: “the united Company of Merchants of England trading to the East Indies”. (The Dutch East India Company is a different body.) See East India Company.

1. The opening words are cut off at the left edge of the photograph: presumably “I Peter Paggen”. The margin heading reads Test[amentum] Petri Paggen.

2. “Katherine (now the Wife of William Hale Esqr)”: the word before “the Wife” is cramped. A closing bracket follows Esqr, so “(now” seems likely.

3. Tenants in section 11: “Lascelles Metcalfe Upholsterer and John Raynolds Waterman”; “John Beal Butcher” (in this hand B and W are very alike, so “Watcher” is possible); “Jacob Maganell Hatmaker”; “Thomas Pavett Husbandman”, where the last two words appear to be struck through. The clerk left a blank for Ilsley’s forename. A few words are blotted out after “situate lying and” and before “William Cheslyn”.

4. Section 14: the surname of John “Scyer” or “Sayer”, the former owner of the Battersea property, is uncertain. “John Bernard Gentleman” is probable; a Bernard Hale Esqr appears in the Schedule.

5. The marks “#” in sections 13 and 17 appear in the register, probably keyed to corrections. The words “and expended”, “present” and “Sarah” are written in the margin as insertions.

6. The surname Hale: in this clerk’s hand a capital H looks almost exactly like a W, and the name could be read “Wale”. It is Hale: Katherine Paggen married William Hale of King’s Walden, Hertfordshire, and their son was Paggen Hale. (James Booth, one of the trustees, was also of Hertfordshire.)

7. Schedule: the surname of “Thomas Welham” (or Wolham) is uncertain.
