The History of Wandsworth Common

William Wilberforce

See also Samuel Wilberforce.

William Wilberforce lived in the Battersea area of London for two separate periods between 1792 and 1808. During this time, the area (which is now considered part of Clapham) was a hub for the "Clapham Sect," a group of evangelical social reformers who were instrumental in the fight to abolish the slave trade.

His residency is associated with two different properties:

Battersea Rise House: From 1792 until his marriage in 1797, Wilberforce lived with his friend and fellow abolitionist, Henry Thornton, at Battersea Rise House.

Broomfield House: After marrying Barbara Spooner in 1797, Wilberforce and his wife moved to Broomfield House (later known as Broomwood House), which was built on the grounds of Battersea Rise. He lived there until 1808. A plaque at 111 Broomwood Road commemorates the site of his former home.
