Mr Mathews's Entertainment — Landing at Wandsworth Common

Mr Mathews last night produced a new entertainment, Travels in Air, Earth, and Water. The first part describes a balloon voyage, with a landing at the side of Wandsworth Common, on the banks of the Thames, where the travellers encounter two cockney sportsmen; and a personification of "Patience in a punt," in the person of a retired linen-draper of Putney, whose sole enjoyment centres in angling, and whose ideas of evil are confined to the frightening of the fish.

Daring Highway Robbery and Attempt to Murder — Wandsworth Lane

Three men — Henry Tuck, William Carpenter, and Stephen Vande — were charged at Union-hall with robbing John Boseley the King's highway and attempting to murder him. Boseley, a travelling pedlar, had done well at Chertsey and was returning to London. About half-past ten o'clock on Wednesday night he entered on Wimbledon Common, where he passed two men; shortly after, a cloth was drawn over his eyes and he was severely cut about the face five times. The perpetrators rifled his pockets, taking four £1 notes, 2l. 6d. in silver, and some trinkets, then left him for dead. Horse patrol officer Dagger discovered him, and officers Warren and Lee apprehended the three defendants within twenty minutes. One, Dando (Vande), gave a detailed alibi placing himself on the road from Wandsworth to Wimbledon — having supped at a friend's house at Wandsworth and walked up Wandsworth lane — and was admitted as evidence against the other two, who were committed for re-examination.
