Council pledge in one-way row — chaos on the South Circular

Wandsworth Council promised to investigate the working of a new major one-way system on the South Circular, which motorists protested had brought chaos and delays. The diversion had come into force round the north side of Wandsworth Common with the start of work on a new six-lane road linking Wandsworth Bridge with Tooting Bec. Drivers complained of jams building up in Trinity Road, Battersea Rise, and North Side at peak periods, causing hold-ups of up to three-quarters of an hour.

GLC "secrecy" row — tell us the traffic plans

A rumpus was brewing between Wandsworth Council and the GLC over its "secrecy" about plans to widen Trinity Road into a possible six-lane highway. Scores of residents in the area were alarmed about whether their homes faced demolition, but neither they nor Wandsworth Council had been given any details.
