Davis's Introduction
In 1889 the late Mr. J. Traviss Squire transcribed and printed The Registers of the Parish of Wandsworth (1603–1787). On p. 354 is this entry:—
“1678, October 29, Anne, dau. of William Cox, labourer.”
Then follows this note:—
“The Register for the following 49 years, comprising a period corresponding to the commencement of the burials in woollen (30 Car. II, cap. 3) is not to be found at the church, nor has the Editor been able to discover it elsewhere.”
Fortunately the Churchwarden Account Books of the parish are still in existence. They contain many entries relating to funerals, which have been copied and are here printed. These entries are supplemented by a few memoranda, enclosed in brackets, thus [ ]. It is to be hoped that this list may help to bridge over the gap of forty-nine years.
The Churchwarden Accounts
The account books survive only for certain years within the 1678–1727 gap; Davis printed what remained. Gaps between the years given below reflect genuine gaps in the surviving books, not omissions in this transcription.

Dates of Death: Cross-Reference to Squire’s Mount Nod Transcription
Davis closes his article with a short index, compiled to help bridge the register gap using two further sources: the epitaphs Squire had transcribed at Mount Nod, and monuments inside the Parish Church itself. In Davis’s own words:
“The following are dates of death taken: (1) from a transcript of the Inscriptions in Mount Nod, by the late Mr. J. T. Squire — the number in brackets is the page in his book on which the epitaph is to be found; (2) from monuments in the Parish Church.”
Editorial note: Davis’s bracketed numbers are page references to a separate, standalone printing of Squire’s Mount Nod article — not the continuous pagination (pp. 229–312) used in the
Huguenot Society Journal itself, and not the inscription numbers (1–145) used on
this site’s transcription of Squire. The two numbering systems don’t align, so exact page-matching isn’t possible without that separate offprint. Several names below can nonetheless be matched by name to specific inscriptions — see the notes underneath.

Notable Discrepancies
Found while cross-referencing this transcription against Squire (1886), the site’s plaque transcriptions, and Chater (2017). Recorded here rather than silently resolved one way or the other.
Baudouin: father and son, not the same man
Squire’s notes on wills record a Peter Baudouin (will dated 20 Jan. 1681, proved 9 March 1681), who describes himself as “of the French nation, now inhabiting in Wandsworth,” leaving his estate to his wife Elizabeth and mentioning sons Daniel and Peter. This is a different man from James Baudouin on the on-site plaque, who died in 1738/9 aged 91 (so born c. 1647/8). Given the shared surname, the shared era, and Wandsworth’s small Huguenot community, Peter is very likely James’s father or a close relation — but they should not be conflated.
Grolleau: Peter, or Lewis?
Three sources disagree on the first name of the Grolleau buried in the same tomb as Paul Fourdrinier. The Wandsworth Council interpretation plaque calls him “Lewis Grolleau,” and Davis’s 1949 index (above) agrees. But Squire’s own note on wills names him Peter Grolleau, citing a will dated 8 Oct. 1726 (proved 14 Nov. 1726) for a Wandsworth weaver of that name, wife Anne, “buried in the same tomb as Paul Fourdrinier.” Squire is the source citing an actual will, which weighs in his favour, but two independent sources agreeing on “Lewis” is not nothing. Worth checking directly against the tomb inscription or the will itself before treating either as settled.
Fourdrinier’s wife: Susannah, or Ann?
The plaque names Paul Fourdrinier’s wife as Susannah (d. 1746), described as the Grolleaus’ daughter. But Fourdrinier’s own will (dated 22 Nov. 1757, proved 2 March 1758) names his wife as Ann, as residuary legatee. The simplest explanation is a second marriage after Susannah’s death in 1746 and before his own death in 1758 — entirely plausible over a twelve-year gap — but it doesn’t appear to be stated anywhere directly, so it remains an inference rather than a confirmed fact.
